Build Scanning Habits At Home: A 12-Minute Off-Ice Routine

1) The Drills (8–9 Minutes Total)

  • Wall Scan & Callout (3 min): quick shoulder check, call the number, receive and return a ball pass.
  • Mirror & Delay (3 min): partner mirrors; on clap, delay and change direction while eyes stay up.
  • Puck-Placement Shadow (2–3 min): stickhandle a tennis ball; on “pressure,” place to back skate and protect.

2) Weekly Plan & Game Transfer

  • Do it 3×/week before practice or school.
  • Cue: “Scan before touch.”
  • What to track: # of scans per shift on film and whether the first touch is under control at the blue line.
